Easy advent calendars you can make at home are a great way of bringing families together. Last year, I designed this embroidered paper advent calendar and gave it to members of my family. Granted, my mum and I are huge crafters, but even my left-handed daughter, who struggles to learn crafts back to front, quickly got the hang of the stitch. It was a hundred times easier than trying to teach her to knit! On the few days running up to Christmas, we made a new tradition, stitching advent calendars together in our pyjamas after breakfast! It felt so festive, cosy and enriching!
Last year, we did the brown kraft paper calendars; this year, I’m suggesting the pink floral versions! Would Judy Garland join us, singing our hearts out to ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’ as we stitch? Thanks to iTunes, yes! The stitch used is a rose stitch, a three-dimensional sculptural stitch that looks like a rose and coincidentally like a Christmas bauble, too! It’s also often called a woven wheel, which accurately describes how to make it. First, stitch the wheel’s spokes onto a circular shape, then weave the wool under and over the wheel’s spokes.
One little rose or wheel is stitched onto the paper calendar every day of Advent from the first of December to the twenty-fifth of December. Could the 19th Century Germans who invented advent calendars have imagined the array of choice we have today? Stitch a day advent calendars I can picture back then, but I’m not so sure about chocolate, tea, beer, perfume, and Lego advent calendars; no way! Calendars for Dogs? Not on your Nellie!
